Coaching Doctors for Professional Development, Career Transitions and Wellbeing

I am a consultant anaesthetist, having completed my specialist training with The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 2012. I currently work in both the public and private health sectors in Newcastle, NSW.
I graduated from medical school at The University of Melbourne in 1999. I traveled to the UK straight after and worked as an intern and senior house officer in the NHS for a couple of years. When I returned to Australia, I took up a training position in Hobart, Tasmania in Emergency Medicine.
I had many wonderful, rich learning experiences during my time in Emergency Medicine. However, I arrived at a few sliding door moments and had a later career change to Anaesthetics.
I completed my Anaesthetics training between Hobart, Auckland and Melbourne. My first consultant job was with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Dubbo, NSW, where I was able to combine my interests in both Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics.
We moved our little family to the Hunter New England region in 2014. Since then I have worked in a Staff Specialist capacity, initially at The Maitland Hospital and then at The John Hunter Hospital. I still get to combine Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesia in my day to day practice in a busy tertiary level teaching hospital. My areas of special interest include emergency and general surgery, ENT and Head and Neck surgery. I also find looking after children and their families in the perioperative period very satisfying and rewarding.
I enjoy teaching, supervising and supporting junior staff in the workplace. I also enjoy supporting my colleagues and peers, which I do as a qualified Professional Development Coach (see below!)

I am a qualified Master Certified Physician Development Coach and Professional Coach, having undertaken training through the Physician Coaching Institute and the Australian Institute of Professional Coaches.
Journeys in the world of medicine are challenging, intense and emotionally strenuous. There are hidden paths to professional fulfilment that can be elusive to find. It is impossible to separate work from the rest of your life. In a highly regulated profession, it is easy to feel lost and lose sight of personal and professional goals. Certainly that little voice of self doubt can sometimes become overwhelming. And we are not immune to burnout.
I struggled at various junctions in my journey - exam failures, feeling like a fraud and finding it difficult to find my "true north". There was nothing "wrong" with me to fix, but I did not feel whole. Coaching was a game changer - it helped me gain clarity around my value system and empowered me to live my medical life with integrity and to the best of my ability.
I strongly believe that every person has the resources and capability within them to make the changes they need to achieve their goals. Every person is on their own unique individual journey, with their own unique individual purpose. Detours along the way are part of the course, and all those experiences only serve to enrich and enhance each unique journey.

Coaching practices are best known for their use in the sporting arena. The application of coaching interventions and coach-like conversations in the world of medicine is relatively new and have already shown promise in improving well-being at work and reducing burnout. It is particularly informed by Positive Psychology Theories, with a focus on what is going "right" rather than what is going wrong - a bit of a paradigm shift in medicine where our work is based on finding and fixing pathology.
According to the International Coaching Federation, coaching is "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential". This involves facilitating self-awareness of issues and problems that might be concerning the individual in their work and/or personal life or goals to be achieved. As such coaching is uniquely positioned to facilitate addressing the "hidden curriculum" in medicine.
In short, a coaching journey is an investment in yourself to discover and live your life in medicine to your full potential.
I offer coaching programs for doctors at all stages of their careers to address areas such as
- Communication and Collegiality
- Career Transitions and Change
- Career Resilience and Fulfilment

In addition to my professional side, I am a mother, a daughter, a wife, an aunt, a sister and a sister-in-law.
